Dynamics 365 modules: an overview of Microsoft’s ERP and CRM solutions
Microsoft Dynamics 365 has united different modules for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) in one comprehensive, cloud-based solution for businesses since 2016.
For each important part of your business, Dynamics 365 provides one or several modules. All modules are compatible with each other and can still be easily adjusted – that is what makes Dynamics 365 special and a comprehensive, unique solution.
Dynamics 365 is suited for small and medium-sized companies as well as big businesses that strive to work in a single comprehensive, individual and scalable environment.
Why Dynamics 365?
All business and customer data stored in just one solution for efficient process planning, a comprehensive understanding of your customers and for making data-driven decisions: that is the thought behind Dynamics 365. Another goal is to push digital transformation: the transformation of processes in order to achieve higher efficiency and productivity – solely made possible by new technologies.
What are the benefits of Dynamics 365?
Dynamics 365 unites your many business areas in one software solution that grows with your company: Mix and match the exact modules you need and prevent constantly switching between systems, simplify processes and increase overall efficiency.
Extend all available Dynamics 365 modules with additional apps and customize your module to meet the challenges of your company and industry. Use Power Apps based on Microsoft Power Platform to develop the apps you need.
- Common data base
Microsoft Dataverse is a service that stores, secures and synchronizes your business’ core data from all Dynamics 365 modules and apps and prevents data silos.
Microsoft Dataverse: Dynamics 365’s data base
Microsoft Dataverse (formerly Common Data Service) is the base of Dynamics 365 (and Microsoft 365) that stores and secures data from one or several modules. Data is sorted into so-called Tables (formerly Entities) that are constantly being synchronized in order to prevent data silos.
Microsoft Dataverse uses several tables to store standard data. With Power Query, it is possible to extend your standard data by individual tables and use that data on Microsoft Power Platform to create analyses in Power BI or to develop new apps.
All data in Microsoft Dataverse is stored safe and secure.
By constantly synchronizing your Dynamics 365 and your app data, your data is more consistent and an additional integration (API) that communicates between your modules and your additional apps is not required.
The benefits of Microsoft Dataverse
- A single data source instead of data from many different devices, apps, services and more
- Base for analyses and reports, e. g. in Power BI
- Base for developing new Dynamics 365 apps
- Consistent data due to your individual core business data in your Dynamics 365 modules and your apps synchronizing
- No need for integrations
- Available worldwide
How much does Dynamics 365 cost?
Dynamics 365 is a cloud-computing service (Software as a Service, SaaS). That means there is no need to buy any software, which means there are no purchasing costs for software. Rather, Dynamics 365 is based on a monthly subscription model, which in turn means you only pay for the number of licenses you need.
Most of the Dynamics 365 modules follow a base-attach model:
- For using any of the Dynamics 365 modules, you require a base license which needs to be purchased at full price.
- Additional licenses are called Attach Licenses which can be purchased for a reduced price.
- There are team member licenses that entail basic Dynamics 365 functions which can be purchased for a lower price, too.

Did you know?
Microsoft’s software solutions for businesses were released under one umbrella in 2006: Microsoft Business Solutions including four ERP apps (Navision, Axapta, Great Plains and Solomon) and one CRM app (Microsoft CRM).
Microsoft later rebranded its business solutions to “Dynamics” renamed them to NAV, AX, GP, SL and Dynamics CRM.
Then, in 2016, the last hurdle towards offering cloud-based business solutions was taken: Dynamic became Dynamics 365. And the rest is history.
